Your Guide to Craniosacral Therapy
Why Craniosacral Therapy?
CST is a form of bodywork that is characterised by light and non-invasive hand contacts. Many people report however that although the touch is gentle, their experience of CST is profound.
Life offers both physical and emotional challenges for us to overcome at any age. CST helps to reduce stress levels and encourages balance. Those who have had treatment say it is deeply relaxing and promotes vitality.
Some people decide to have CST because they have acute physical symptoms such as a bad back or tension headaches, but others come with longstanding problems, both physical and emotional.
Mothers bring their babies with conditions arising from difficult and traumatic deliveries, and will often have treatment themselves throughout pregnancy as well as post-natal.
This work is ideal for both the young and the elderly because of its sensitive approach.
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
A CST session is a safe and quiet space where your body can relax and feel more in tune with its own healing potential.
In response to the listening hand contacts used by a Craniosacral therapist, areas of longstanding physical and emotional tension are encouraged to gradually release.
General and local relaxation accompanied by feelings of heightened well-being are experienced as old patterns of tightness begin to free up and soften.
How Often Should I Visit?
I will suggest how often you will need to come, but in general, CST should be seen as a medium to long term treatment option. Time is usually needed to address longstanding problems, and CST should not be seen as a quick fix. However, some conditions, especially in young babies may resolve more quickly and require less time.
Do I Need a Referral from my GP?
During your first session, you will normally be asked if you have consulted your GP.
Depending on your symptoms, you may be recommended to do so before treatment takes place. CST does not seek to replace conventional medical treatment.
As with other holistic approaches, there can be a period of adjustment after treatment and sometimes some minor discomfort as the healing process is stimulated. If this occurs it is generally short lived, and usually seen as a sign of natural rebalancing.
How Is It Done?
A CST session takes place with you, the client, fully clothed. The practitioner either sits or stands, and makes light contact at various places on the body.
Care is taken that each touch is comfortable.
Where appropriate you may be invited to share any sensations and images that arise during the session. If necessary, treatment can take place on a chair or other suitable place.
Anything Else?
CST is said to promote overall healthy function, and is suitable for all age groups.
Babies and young children respond particularly well to a gentle and non-invasive way of working.
